Think you are not a water hog? Think again. The average person uses about 400 gallons of water per day. Even more surprising is the amount of water used outdoors. According to the EPA, almost half of the water consumed is used outdoors!
But there are ways to reduce your water use, and still maintain a beautiful landscape. As we enter the heat of summer, here are a few tips you can implement today:
- Select your plants carefully. Local varieties of plants will perform better than those from a different climate. Not only will these plants adapt to the surroundings, they will require less water and upkeep on your end.
- Seek plants that have low-water needs. Some types of plants, such as succulents do very well with little water, and horde whatever they can get their roots on!
- Focus on perennials. These types of plants come back year after year and require less water and maintenance than annuals. Plus, you will save transportation costs to obtain annuals year after year.
- Collect your rain water. This technique had been used to irrigate crops for centuries. The practice of doing this at home is a new, but popular trend. Rainwater is naturally low in chlorine and salt, making it a better source of hydrations for your plants than tap water.
These are a few quick tips that can help your family save water. Get everyone involved, and make saving water a group effort!
